Mbappé king, Neymar outside the elite ten: What does the ranking of the most valuable footballers in the world look like?

Transfermarkt recently came up with an updated ranking of the most valuable footballers on the planet. The leader is still Kylian Mbappé, chased by Erling Haaland, while Neymar has dropped out of the elite ten. So what is the ranking of the top ten players?

Kylian Mbappé (PSG, 160 million euros)

Who is currently the most valuable footballer on the planet? According to Transfermarkt, it’s still twenty-three-year-old Frenchman Mbappé, who, with a market value of around €160 million, tops the list of the world’s most valuable players.

For PSG in the 2021/22 season, Mbappé started 47 games, scoring 41 goals and adding 27 assists.

Yet, until recently, he did not know whether he would continue in the Parisian organization. After several negotiations and thanks to a very exceptional, sometimes even controversial contract, the French club managed to keep Mbappé.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City, 150 million euros)

The second position is held by Norwegian super-talent Haaland, who currently has a market value of 150 million euros. However, compared to the aforementioned French footballer, Dortmund couldn’t keep Haaland.

The Norwegian sniper, who has scored thirty goals in thirty-one games will link his future with Manchester City from next season.

Vinícius Junior (Real Madrid, €100 million)

In third place is twenty-one-year-old Real Madrid star Vinícius Junior. The young Brazilian winger has been an absolutely key figure for the royal club on their way to the Champions League title.

Across all competitions, he has started 54 games and, in hockey terminology, has scored 42 points (22+20). In terms of market value, however, he trails second-placed Haaland by an abysmal €50 million.

Mohamed Salah & Harry Kane (Liverpool & Tottenham, €90 million)

The fourth and fifth positions belong to players who are both in the English Premier League, and whose market value has dropped by ten million. The first of this pair is Mohamed Salah. The 30-year-old Egyptian striker played 59 games in the recently concluded season, in which he recorded 33 accurate goals and 17 assists.

The other is the 28-year-old English international Harry Kane, who played 51 games for Tottenham. His record? 28 goals and 10 assists.

However, both players are still very expensive and attractive commodities despite the ten million drop. Their current market value is 90 million euros.

Dusan Vlahovic (Juventus Turin, €85 million)

Dusan Vlahovic occupies the sixth place in the ranking. The 22-year-old Serbian forward with killer instincts is undoubtedly a future superstar. Vlahovic left Fiorentina on 28 January this year to join Juventus Torino.

And this has also had an impact on his market value, which has shot up from the original €70 million to €85 million. In the Italian top flight for the 2021/22 season, he scored 24 goals in 36 matches and acted as an assistant in five others.

Christopher Nkunku (Red Bull Leipzig, €80 million)

The Leipzig striker’s market value has also rocketed. Christopher Nkunku hit 52 games for Red Bull, in which he put in absolutely superb performances. This means, firstly, that Leipzig won’t keep him for long, but also that his price tag has risen by 15 million.

The Italian champion AC Milan is very interested in him and would have to spend at least 80 million euros. 35 goals and 19 assists make the 24-year-old one of the best footballers on the planet.

Lautaro Martínez (Inter Milan, €75 million)

The eighth position belongs to Lautaro Martínez, who had to swallow a bitter disappointment. Inter failed to beat AC Milan in the battle for the Italian title, after which the Nerazzurri had to settle for second place.

The Argentine striker, whose current market value is 75 million euros, scored 26 goals and five assists in 50 starts.

Jadon Sancho (Manchester United, €75 million)

It’s safe to say that Sancho is a big disappointment, and not just for Manchester United fans. The player who came to England from German side Dortmund was supposed to be an absolute difference maker, but in 29 games he only registered three goals and three assists.

In March 2020, when Sancho was just nineteen years old, his market value was around the €130 million mark. But after the next year, his price dropped by thirty million. And after his transfer to England, it dropped significantly further.

Heung-min Son (Tottenham, 75 million euros)

The elite ten is rounded off by the twenty-nine-year-old Korean striker Son, who scored 26 times in 48 games and added 10 goal assists. However, he also had to cope with a reduced market value, albeit only by five million.

It should be added, Son, Salah and Kane are the only players in the top 10 who are over 24 years old. So for their advanced football age, this trio of footballers still hold a very high standard.

The second ten

The Brazilian Neymar had to leave the top ten, whose market value dropped from 90 to 75 million euros. On the other hand, Joao Félix remained at the same amount. The Portuguese talent is also on AC Milan’s list of possible reinforcements, with a price tag of 70 million euros.

The price tag of the AC Milan winger has skyrocketed. Rafael Leão will currently cost potential suitors at least 70 million euros. The 23-year-old Portuguese has been a huge mainstay for AC in their title quest and is growing into a really big star.

However, the market value has dropped for four other players (Grealish, Mané, Sterling, Lukaku), Liverpool’s Luis Díaz has literally skyrocketed to eighteenth place and Victor Osimhen is nineteenth. Federico Chiesa rounds out the second ten with 65 million euros.
