Jiri Prochazka will fight for the UFC championship belt on Sunday
The history of MMA in the Czech Republic is being written. The unthinkable years ago is now becoming a reality. Jiri Procházka, the hottest iron in the fire of domestic MMA, will fight for the welterweight championship belt of the world’s biggest MMA organization UFC on Sunday morning.
His opponent will be mixed martial arts veteran Glover Teixeira. The Brazilian himself is living a fairytale story, having finally won the organization’s title at the age of 42 after an incredible 21 fights under the UFC banner.
Jirka is the one going straight into a title fight after just two fights in the UFC. Let’s recap what his two previous opponents who took the biggest blows from him had to say about him, after which they went to dreamland. Don’t expect any disrespect, the Moravian Samurai has earned some well-deserved respect.
His first UFC opponent, Volkan Oezdemir, predicts a title shot
His first fight in the UFC took place in July 2020 against Volkan Oezdemir and Jirka flew into it like a hurricane. Less than 50 seconds into the second round, the Swiss fighter experienced the first knockout of his career.
“Congratulations to Jiri on the first knockout of my life,” he wrote on his Instagram straight from the hospital. “Respect,” he added to the Czech fighter.
Less than a year later, he has spoken out about his opponent again. “He brings something different to the game,” he said respectfully in an interview on GNP1 TV. “Just his character, his face and his attitude, the way he moves; he’s definitely on his way to the title,” he acknowledged Prochazka’s qualities.
Dominick Reyes also expressed great respect for the Czech samurai’s skills
BJP’s second match was against another former title challenger, Dominick Reyes. The Czech fighter completely dominated him as well and sent him to the floor in the second round with a brutal elbow from a spin.
“This guy is a real beast, when I looked into his eyes at the staredown, I saw that he was willing to die in that cage,” he praised the Czech fighter in an interview on the Combat Sports on Fanatics View YouTube channel.
“Fighting with fighters like Jiri means everything to me, I want to fight the best in the world all the time, ” he said about the Czech warrior. “He is a good human being, he is a samurai, he has the soul of a warrior, I have nothing but respect for him,” said Reyes, who had to take two months off after the brutal fight with Prochazka to heal his injuries to his body and mind.
We will find out this weekend if we will also see words of respect from the Brazilian Teixeira. The main card of UFC 275 starts around 4 a.m. on Sunday, so we can expect to see Jiri Prochazka fight around 6 a.m.
