Last night, Ukrainian footballers returned to the World Cup fray, and it was a fine return indeed. In Hampden Park, Scotland, they defeated the home team of the Scots 1: 3 and are one step away from qualifying for the final tournament in Qatar.

Standing in their way are Wales and Russian President Putin, who has thrown his troops into Ukraine. Not surprisingly, the thoughts of the Ukrainian representatives immediately turned back to those fighting on the front line after the final whistle.

Pelé, who is one of the most famous athletes on the planet and has a huge influence not only in the football world, has inserted himself into the conflict. He tried to use his influence to end the Russian-Ukrainian war and wrote a heartfelt letter on his social media to Vladimir Putin, whom he met face-to-face years ago.

Pele said the following on social media:

Vladimir Putin,

Today, Ukraine is trying to forget, at least for 90 minutes, the tragedy that continues to engulf their country. Fighting for a place at the World Cup is already a difficult task – almost impossible now that so many lives are at stake.

I want to use today’s match as an opportunity to plead: stop the invasion. There is absolutely no justification for this ongoing violence.

This conflict is vicious, unjustifiable and brings only pain, fear, terror and anxiety. There is no reason for it to go on any longer.

When we met in the past and exchanged smiles accompanied by a long handshake, I never thought that one day we would be as divided as we are now.

Wars exist only to separate nations, and there is no ideology that justifies missiles that bury children’s dreams, destroy families and kill innocents.

I have lived through eight decades in which I have seen wars and seen and heard hate speeches promoting atrocities in the name of their nation’s security by spineless leaders. We must stop this and evolve.

I promised myself a long time ago that I would always fight for peace. The power to stop this conflict is in your hands. The same ones I shook hands with in Moscow, at our last meeting in 2017.
