Video: Manchester City fan attacks Aston Villa goalkeeper

The last round of the Premier League was tense until the last second. Manchester City scored three goals in five minutes to turn the game around against Aston Villa. Citizens fans ran onto the pitch after the final whistle and began to celebrate. Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen was the target of the attack.

The game didn’t start well for Manchester. Aston Villa, who had only defended on the edge of their own sixteen all game, took the lead in the 37th minute when Cash scored with a header. In the 69th minute, former Liverpool player Coutinho added a second goal.

Manchester City struggled badly in the end as they had only one shot on target up to that point. But after Coutinho was substituted, the game turned completely around.

In the 76th minute, substitute Gündogan reduced the deficit and two minutes later Rodri equalised. The comeback was completed again by Gündogan, who was exclusively found at the back post by Kevin De Bruyne. For the rest of the game, the Citizens just kept their guard up and in the 95th minute, blue hell could have broken loose at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City fans ran onto the pitch and celebrated. Some, however, did not go to celebrate the club’s success. Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen clashed with one of them and had to leave the pitch accompanied by security.

Manchester City management subsequently apologised to the Swedish goalkeeper for the fan’s attack.

A statement from City on Sunday said

“The club has launched an immediate investigation and, once the identity of the person responsible has been established, an indefinite ban from the stadium will be imposed.”

Guardiola, who warned fans to behave themselves during the week, apologised to Olsen and expressed hope that the man in question would be punished.

It was not the first incident during the final celebrations on the English turf. Already after the match of the 33rd round of the English league, Crystal Palace coach Patrick Vieira got into a physical altercation with a home Everton fan. The latter provoked him as he went to the locker room and Vieira kicked the supporter.

Police recently sentenced a Nottingham fan to a 24-week jail term after he attacked Sheffield United player Billy Sharp following the Premier League play-off semi-final.

“We are very concerned about the series of attacks by fans that have marred the end of the season, ” the FA said in a statement.
