Lionel Messi has become the highest earning sportsman on the planet. He left behind stars like Lebron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady and Roger Federer in the rankings. What does the top ten look like?
Last year he was second, but this year Lionel Messi is already the king of the list of the highest-earning athletes on the planet, compiled by Forbes magazine. He hasn’t improved financially and, as in the previous year, he has earned a respectable $130 million, or more than 3 billion crowns.
However, his involvement with PSG is certainly not the main source of Messi’s income. The Argentine has well-paid collaborations with companies such as Adidas, Budweiser and PepsiCo.
The second position was occupied by NBA star LeBron James, who earned $121.2 million. The current Los Angeles Lakers player has become a movie star outside of playing basketball, announcing a deal with Crypto.com in January and investing in Tonal.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who is tearing up records in popularity, is third on the list. It is his large social media following that helps him generate profits of $115 million a year. He is sponsored by companies such as Nike, Herbalife and Clear. Ronaldo himself is investing in Tatel restaurants and will be the face of the upcoming ZujuGP football app.
The fourth position is occupied by the third and last footballer in the top ten ranking – Neymar. The Brazilian has earned $95 million in the last 12 months thanks to collaborations with Puma and Red Bull. In addition, a documentary about him has been released on Netflix and he plans to delve into the world of NFT.
Rounding out the top five is another NBA star, Stephen Curry, the best three-guard in the history of the league, with $92.8 million.
Missing from the top ten is last year’s leader
Last year, MMA fighter Conor McGregor topped the list with $180 million. This year, however, he is missing. So is Lewis Hamilton, who finished eighth a year ago.
On the other hand, basketball player Kevin Durrant ($92.1 million), tennis player Roger Federer ($90.7 million) and American NFL star Tom Brady ($83.9 million) have remained in the ranking.
Newcomers include boxer Canelo Alvarez ($90 million), who is ranked eighth, and basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo ($80.9 million), who at 27 is the youngest member of the list.
