Polish beauty wants to be UFC champion again! History repeats itself, Jedrzejczyk is clear
Joanna Jedrzejczyk has made a significant mark in the history of women’s MMA, she was a UFC champion and defended her title five times. However, she had a bad run in her last fights and then had a break of more than two years. But she’ll be back in action in June and she has a clear plan.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk has made a significant mark in the history of women’s MMA, she was a UFC champion and defended her title five times. However, she had a bad run in her last fights and then had a break of more than two years. But she’ll be back in action in June and she has a clear plan.
Her last appearance in the cage was in March 2020. In arguably the best women’s MMA fight in history, she succumbed to Chinese fighter Weili Zhang, who won the title after an incredible five-round battle.
Afterwards, pictures of what Joanna Jedrzejczyk looked like before and after the fight flew around the world. The difference was truly incredible. It was all the more admirable for the Pole that she didn’t give up the fight.
In that time, the women’s strawweight division has come full circle and the champions’ names seem to be going around in circles. And it could continue to do so. For after more than two years, the 34-year-old Pole will return to the cage and her opponent will once again be Zhang.
And what is Jedrzejczyk’s goal? A return to the title, of course. “History likes to repeat itself and it’s happening now. I’m in the right place at the right time. At the end of the year I will be champion. The perfect scenario for me is to win on June 11 and then close the year with a fight at Madison Square Garden, where I lost the belt a few years ago,” she expressed on The MMA Hour.
Jedrzejczyk has been undefeated for a good portion of her career. She didn’t experience her first loss until her 15th professional fight, by which time she was on a 14-fight win streak, 8 of which were in the UFC and 6 of which were title fights.
The Pole is therefore a legend in women’s MMA. Five successful defenses is something not everyone can boast. Moreover, in the strawweight division she has the most wins of any female fighter, only the current champion Carla Esparza is on the same level.
And it’s Esparza that Jedrzejczyk wants to beat for the title at the end of the year. After all, she won the UFC title against her when she knocked her out in the second round.
