Tyson Fury’s iconic journey to the heavyweight throne of boxing today
It was a long and winding road for Fury before he finally sold out his home Wembley in what may have been the last fight of his professional career.
His stunning victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, followed by a ban for drug use and a long personal crisis, followed by an epic dream trilogy with Deontay Wilder, cemented his place as a true great of the game. A beautiful story completed.
England has waited a long time for the battle of its greats. Some hope was given four years ago by Anthony Joshua, who five years ago also managed to beat Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in the last fight of the Ukrainian’s illustrious career.
It was Joshua who claimed to be the best boxer in the British Isles and the great hope of world boxing. However, he has since lost memorable fights to Andy Ruiz Jr and Oleksandr Usyk last September.
94,000 fans came to Wembley for Tyson Fury’s defence of Dillian Whyte
Tyson Fury was the one who wrote his own story and showed that he is the true king of not only the UK, but of the heavyweight division today. Rightfully so, he crowned himself the people’s champion and it was he who finally stood on home soil in front of a sold out shrine. In an island battle, he was eventually faced by the tough Dillian Whyte.
Whyte had been highly ranked for years and was eagerly awaiting his shot at the WBC’s World Heavyweight Organization. Although Tyson Fury had demanded a unification bout with WBA, IBF and WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk, Usyk’s confirmed rematch with Joshua and the Ukrainian’s subsequent departure to defend his territory from the Russian invasion eventually assigned Fury’s former partner Whyte in his last fight.
When the bout between the British boxing greats was announced, it was clear that the National Stand at Wembley would be sold out and an amazing atmosphere was expected. When the two protagonists entered the ring, the images of a packed stadium with 94,000 fans lighting up their phones were literally breathtaking.
The fight finally took the expected course and Tyson Fury finished his opponent with a brutal uppercut in the sixth round
The first round of the fight may not have been as aggressive as Fury promised. But he was gradually keeping his distance and sniffing out his boxing opponent in the opposite guard.
He did threaten with his proverbial right hooks from the later rounds on, but they flew through the air or hit the ropes around the ring. Fury’s proverbial eye lived up to its reputation that night, and Fury schooled his rival in boxing skills.
At the start of the fourth round, there was a big commotion in the ring. The referee had to admonish both protagonists several times as several dirty punches appeared in the clinch. This particularly got Fury fired up and the champion took second gear. After that round, a cut opened up next to Whyte’s right eye and Fury smelled his blood.
Then in the sixth round Whyte swung his hooks furiously, but they all missed their mark and Fury whispered taunts in his opponent’s ear. What had originally been expected to be an even fight became a game of cat and mouse.
At the end of the sixth round, Fury waited for the right moment and then sent Whyte to the floor with a massive uppercut. He tried to get up again and tried to continue the fight, but the challenger’s legs stopped obeying and the referee had to stop the fight.
Fury paid tribute to his opponent after the fight and then retired
“I’m overwhelmed by the support, I can’t believe 94,000 of my countrymen came here tonight to see me fight,” champion Fury was overwhelmed by the packed Wembley according to The Sun.
“Dillian Whyte is a warrior, I believe he will be a world champion one day,” he paid tribute to his opponent who had to get oxygen in his corner to breathe in the brutal knockout. “I am one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and unfortunately for Dillian he had to face me tonight,” he added.
He then confirmed his expected retirement after the fight, however, he accepted the challenge of UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou right in the ring, so we will definitely see him between the ropes again. Thus far, the undefeated Fury has made boxing history with his storied career in very bold letters.
