One of the biggest favourites in this year’s Champions League will have to catch up in Tuesday’s return leg. Bayern unexpectedly lost 0:1 at Villarreal a week ago and now it is up to them to turn things around at home.
Bayern are not in ideal form, having won only four of their last seven games. They cruised through the Champions League with ease until the Villarreal debacle, advancing from first place and knocking out Salzburg 8-1 on aggregate.
Villarreal reached the top eight teams in the competition from second place in the group, then knocked out Juventus 4: 1 in the eighth round. However, the Yellow Submarine are not doing well either, winning only the last four matches against Bayern.
Robert Lewandowski is going for his first Ballon d’Or, with forty-six goals and four assists. Thomas Müller is also having an excellent season, the offensive midfielder has scored twelve times and added twenty-two assists.
On the away side, Gerard Moreno is scoring twelve goals and assisting four times. Bournemouth’s summer signing Arnaut Danjuma had a hand in eighteen goals (14+4).
Bayern has been a bit stagnant offensively, scoring more than one goal in only three of their last eight games.
It won’t be easy to break that against Villarreal, the Yellow Submarine have scored more than once in only one of their last six games.
Given the strength of the home environment and the Lewandowski factor, I think Bayern will win by two or more goals and therefore advance.
