A packed Camp Nou stadium watched the Women’s El Clásico

Barcelona have been experiencing successful moments in recent weeks after a dry spell, firstly by ransacking the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, when they disgraced the Madrid side in the league Clásico 0:4.

Ten days later, the Catalan club experienced further success when the women’s team reached the Champions League semi-finals over their Madrid rivals.

Although the Barcelona players’ progress was expected given the fact that Real Madrid is just starting with the women’s team, the match still shattered records.

After the Barcelona players won 1: 3 at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium, where Real Madrid reserve team Castilla play their home games, the rematch in Barcelona was a mere formality.

Attendance set a new attendance record in women’s football

This match set a record for the largest attendance in women’s football in its history, surpassing the 1999 World Cup final between the United States and China. This match was watched by 90,185 spectators.

The record through the largest attendance of a women’s club match to date was held by the match between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, which was watched by 30,814 fans at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in 2019.

Current men’s team coach Xavi Hernandez and legendary defender Carles Puyol were among the fans seen at the stadium.

Barcelona’s players won 5-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League

After a rainy start to the day in Barcelona, the weather improved before and during the match. Thousands of people, including a significant number of women and children, waved their flags and scarves to cheer the Blaugrana as they arrived at the stadium, creating a real atmosphere. Real Madrid were of course greeted with deafening boos.

During the match, the fans did not stop cheering and encouraging their charges. In a beautiful match, the spectators could see a total of seven goals and the home team Barcelona won 5: 2.

The atmosphere in the stadium was not too different from the one that prevails during the matches of the men’s team. There were classic mosaics and well-known chants.

After the final whistle, the home players walked around the stadium to show their appreciation to the fans who came to watch. It was a day of celebration not only for Barcelona fans, but for fans of women’s football in general.
