Hockey has always been Canada’s international sport and the country of 38 million has no competition on the ice. But recently, two other traditional sports have been on the rise in Canada.
Tennis has recently been brought back to the top by 21-year-old talent Félix Auger-Aliassime, who is already ninth on the ATP rankings. Another Canadian tennis player, Denis Shapovalov, is ranked 14th. Both players are also doing well together in tournaments for Canada.
And “soccer,” as the sport is called in North America, is enjoying unprecedented success. The soccer team has made it to the World Cup for the first time in 36 years, last competing in 1986.
Canada’s investment in youth has paid off, benefiting the national team. Alphonso Davies plays for Bayern Munich, Jonathan David plays for Lille and Tajon Buchanan wears the Bruges jersey. They are all U-23 players, so Canada can count on them for the next few years.
There’s one game left to play in the qualifiers, but Canada is already a sure winner of the group. Second USA and third Mexico are 3 points behind, but the Maple Leafs have a better record against both teams (2: 0, 1: 1 USA; 2: 1, 1: 1 Mexico).
Canada also has the best offense (23 goals) and best defense (6 goals scored) in North American qualifying. John Herdman’s men can look forward to Qatar.
And the Canadians have a lot to make up for at the final championship. In 1986, in Mexico, they were one of the worst teams at the tournament, finishing last in their group without a point. At the current championship, however, Canada can think beyond the group stage.
