FIFA and UEFA have imposed sanctions on Russian teams in international competitions
In the wake of Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, Russian teams have faced significant sanctions from football’s governing bodies UEFA and FIFA. These bodies have decided to suspend Russian teams from participating in international football competitions across both men’s and women’s teams.
FIFA and UEFA announced in a joint statement on 28 February that they had taken action against the Russian teams. “FIFA and UEFA have jointly decided today that all Russian teams, whether national teams or club teams, will be suspended from participating in FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” the joint statement said.
“The FIFA and UEFA football authorities stand united and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine and both organisations hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football can once againbe a symbol of unity and peace between people,” the statement continued.
No end date has been set for the lifting of the sanctions, with Russia currently banned indefinitely from participating in FIFA and UEFA competitions such as the World Cup, Euro, Champions League and Europa League.
In addition, St Petersburg has been stripped of hosting the Champions League final this season and the final match will eventually be played on 28 May at the Stade de France in Paris.
The Russian Football Federation has lodged an appeal against the sanctions with CAS
The Russian Football Union (RFU) has filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the sanctions imposed by FIFA and UEFA. In its statement, the RFU said it demanded the reinstatement of all its teams in the aforementioned competitions.
“The RFU will demand the reinstatement of all men’s and women’s national teams of Russia in all types of competitions in the tournaments they have participated in, including compensation,” the Russian Football Union statement read.
The CAS has confirmed receipt of the appeal and will decide the fate of the Russian teams in the coming days
According to Goal, after receiving the official appeal from the Russian Football Federation, the CAS said it intends to issue a final decision in the case as soon as possible, especially due to the fast-approaching deadline of the competitions.
The RFU’s appeal is also aimed at national football associations, including the Czech one, which have also challenged the participation of Russian teams in international competitions.
In the next few days we will probably see the resolution of this “riddle”. Czech fans are most interested in the barrage for the World Cup in Qatar, where, if the CAS overturns FIFA’s decision, we may see the Czech and Russian national teams clash in the event of a win for the final tournament.
