Real Madrid has had a great week. After a heroic run in the Champions League against PSG, they made it to the playoffs against Mallorca and now have a 10 point lead thanks to a stumble by Sevilla. So is the La Liga title fight decided?
The fiasco in the first leg in Paris gave Real Madrid a real kick in the pants. Since then, Ancelotti’s charges have five wins, 14 goals scored and only two conceded.
On Wednesday against PSG, all the players went to the edge of their strength, several of them finished with injuries, so it was not certain how they would cope with the erratic finish in the Balearic Islands.
But Los Blancos players went according to their usual script. In the first half, they were rocking and rolling, so no goal fell. But in the second half, the whirlwind came when Vinícius scored after Benzema’s assist, and the French marksman himself followed up with two goals to make it 3-0.
With Sevilla only drawing 0: 0 with Rayo Vallecano on Friday, Real Madrid are now 10 points ahead. Moreover, with only 10 rounds to go, the Merengues only need to win 7 matches to secure the title. And that’s assuming Sevilla don’t lose anymore, which is not very realistic.
Los Blancos, however, have nothing easy to do in the end. They will play Barcelona this weekend, then face Celta Vigo away and Getafe at home. Then comes quite possibly the decisive and most difficult duel, when Real take on Sevilla at the Ramón Sanchéz Pizjuán. There, they could cut off the only chaser from their hopes of a sensational title for good.
After that, it travels to Pamplona to play Osasuna, before taking on Espanyol at home. After that comes El Derbi Madrileño against Atlético Madrid and duels with Levante, Cádiz and Betis.
