Slavia can attack Czechoslovak Cup records in the EKL! Yira Sor can fight for the golden boot again

Prague Slavia lost the EKL semi-final rematch with LASK Linz 3:4. However, the course of the match and the game did not correspond to the result. The Slavs were severely hampered by the fact that they finished the game with two players sent off. However, they are still pleased to reach the quarter-finals of the European Conference League. Moreover, the Slavs are playing to break other records.

The Seškis are experiencing an offensive feast in the current European season. They have scored a staggering 21 goals in the Conference Europa League group stage and in the two knockout rounds. If the Champions League and Europa League preliminary rounds are included, Slavia would have scored 25 goals.

Czech and Slovak teams have managed to score even more goals throughout history (in Europe), but if Slavia continue in a similar trend and manage to advance to the semi-finals, they are in serious danger of rewriting the historical tables and records.

If we look at the table including the preliminary rounds, Slavia are exactly 7 goals short of equalling Viktoria Plzen from the 2013/14 season. In the table, which counts only the matches of the main stage of European competitions, Jindřich Trpišovský’s charges are only 5 goals short of equalling Trnava’s record from the 1968/69 season.

If the Susians score at least one goal in the quarter-final double-header of the European Conference League, they will finish in second place behind Trnava.

EKL Golden Boot for Yira Sora?

Who would have thought of that in January? Probably no one. Yira Sor transferred to Slavia for a then astronomical 30 million crowns plus player compensation for Baník. The Ostrava club is also said to have kept a percentage of the eventual sale in this deal.

At the time, many football fans were tapping their foreheads. Another winger? What for? But Trpišovský’s squad made a striker out of Sor worthy of European football.

The Nigerian speedster has scored 5 goals in 4 games and is tied for fourth place among the top scorers in the EKL. Only two players have more goals – Ola Solbakken (Bodø/Glimt) and Cyriel Dessers (Feyenoord). Tammy Abraham (AS Roma), the competition’s provisional top scorer, has two more goals.

It sounds like a big fairy tale, but if Sor keeps his form, the golden boot might not be science fiction at all. The stats speak clearly for him. Solbakken needed 14 games (including prelims) and 26 shots to score 6 goals, Dessers needed 8 games and 7 shots to score 6 goals. The stellar Abraham needed 9 games and 22 shots.

Yira Sor has played only 4 matches so far and scored 5 goals, for which he needed 14 shots. The 21-year-old Slavic player also boasts a relatively good passing success rate (81%).
