Young players are getting more and more space in football and the English Premier League is no exception. Youngsters are trusted by teams fighting for the top ranks, as well as teams fighting to stay up. Which offensive talents aged 21 and under have repaid their teams’ trust with the most goals?
9 goals – Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka
Arsenal duo Smith Rowe and Saka top the list with 9 goals. Both are offspring of the club and both look like they can be built around by the Gunners in the future.
Twenty-one year old Smith Rowe has had to give up his place in the starting line-up to others at times, but he has no problem making a name for himself as a substitute – after all, 3 of his goals were scored after coming off the bench.
Saka has a place in the starting lineup. He has been demonstrating his qualities to the fans of the London club for the third season. He undoubtedly has the potential to be a key player for the Gunners and the England national team for many years to come. On Saturday against Aston Villa, he scored Arsenal’s 2000th goal in the Premier League.
7 goals – Phil Foden
Next up is Manchester City’s young star Phil Foden. The twenty-one-year-old midfielder made his debut for the Citizens back in 2017 and since then, he has settled properly into the starting line-up and has enjoyed 3 league titles.
As he has been appearing at times as a false nine under Pep Guardiola, there is no doubt that he will add plenty more goals. But will he manage to win the coveted Champions League with the Citizens?
6 goals – Jacob Ramsey, Armando Broja
Aston Villa’s rising star, 20-year-old midfielder Jacob Ramsey, was given a few opportunities in the Premier League last season, but he hasn’t really made his mark yet.
This season he has already delivered, scoring 6 league goals. He has come into form especially in 2022, he has also benefited from the arrival of Coutinho who has set him up with 3 goals. Gareth Southagte has admitted that he is watching him closely, but he hasn’t received an invitation to the national team yet.
The same number of goals have been scored by 20-year-old Armando Broja, the Chelsea striker who is having a very good away season at Southampton. Ralph Hassenhütl would surely like to secure his services permanently, but that will probably not be easy.
5 goals – Gabriel Martinelli, Mason Greenwood
Next up we find Arsenal’s representative again, namely 20-year-old Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli, who has scored 5 times and is another player who proves that Arsenal’s bet on young players is starting to pay off.
His good performances this season have also earned him his first call-up to the senior national team.
Manchester United talent Mason Greenwood has scored the same number of goals. He started the season in great form, scoring in 3 games in a row.
However, he is currently facing rape charges and there is a big question mark over how his promising career will develop.
3 goals – Jadon Sancha, Anthony Gordon
Jadon Sancho was definitely expected to score more than just 3 league goals. He didn’t get his first league hit until the end of November, but recent performances suggest that he’s starting to settle into the Premier League.
Twenty-one-year-old Everton man Anthony Gordon has scored the same number of goals. It’s not much, but in a tough Toffees season he is the team’s third top scorer and his performances are one of Everton’s few positives.
2 goals – Michael Olise
The ranking is rounded off by the youngest player, 20-year-old English talent Michael Olise. He arrived at Crystal Palace from Reading before this season and since Patrick Vieira doesn’t want to rush anything, he mostly starts on the bench.
It was as a substitute that he scored both his goals. Given his potential, he will undoubtedly add some goals in the Premier League. Liverpool are reportedly interested in him.
