National team defender Ales Matějů has transferred to Venezia FC (Venice), according to the club’s website. He signed a contract until the end of this season with an option for two more years.
The 25-year-old player arrived after his contract was cancelled in the second league Brescia, where he had been for the last three and a half years. He played a total of 31 games for them in Serie A and 65 games in Serie B. He scored only once.
But he will not have an easy time in Venice. The team is currently fighting to stay in the top Italian league. They are 18th in the Serie A relegation table, two points behind the relegation zone.
He will now be the third Czech in the Italian top flight after Antonin Barak at Verona and David Zima at FC Torino.
Matějů started league football in Příbram, then spent six months as a guest at PSV Eindhoven. From Příbram he moved to Plzeň, where he also played in European Cups. He then joined Brighton in England, from where he moved to Brescia. First on loan and then on a permanent transfer.
The versatile defender can play on both sides of the defence. He has been a regular member of youth national teams since the age of 17. In the senior team he has 10 national team starts.
