Kieran Trippier, the hero of Newcastle’s last few games, has been sidelined by a broken ankle

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier suffered a broken bone in his foot in Sunday’s game against Aston Villa. The club confirmed this on their website, adding that he will miss the next few games.

Kieran Trippier scored a 35th minute goal from a direct kick in the first half to give Newcastle a 1-0 win over Aston Villa. However, he was injured at the start of the second half and had to withdraw from the game.

Immediately after the match he underwent an X-ray and unfortunately it was confirmed that he suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his left leg and will undergo surgery. The club will therefore miss him noticeably in the next few games as they try to move away from the relegation places.

Trippier arrived in January as a big signing from Atlético Madrid. The experienced defender immediately helped Newcastle to three wins in a row with two goals from the last two games.

He even wore the captain’s armband in the match against Aston Villa. Trippier is likely to be replaced by Javier Manquillo or Emil Krafth in Newcastle’s lineup in the next matches.

But replacing the quality of Trippier will be difficult. He already has 35 national team starts for Albion in his career and managed to win La Liga with Atletico Madrid last year.

He still has five games to play before the March national break. Everyone at St. James’ Park is hoping that the injury will not require more time to heal than these next few league rounds. Otherwise, it would be a noticeable blow to Newcastle’s rescue ambitions.
