Senegal and Cape Verde will face each other in the eighth round of the African Championship. Neither of the teams have performed well in the group matches, so it could be a very interesting match.
For example, Sadio Mané and Kalidou Koulibaly are playing for Senegal, yet their national team did not perform fantastically. In Group B, they came first, but won only one match.
In addition to the one win, they recorded two draws. They recorded only five points, but that was enough to take first place. Second placed Guinea and third placed Malawi had four points each. Senegal scored only one goal in the group stage, but did not concede any.
Senegal’s only scorer so far is Liverpool star Sadio Mané. He scored in the first game from a penalty against Zimbabwe. The penalty kick was not taken until the 97th minute.
Cape Verde advanced to the eight-finals after finishing third in Group A. Of their three matches, they won one, drew one and lost one. Their record is 2-2.
Overall, not many goals have been scored at the African Championship. The same is likely to happen in this semi-final match, in which Senegal will be the bigger favourite.
Senegal have only managed to score once in the tournament so far, yet we believe they will break the bad streak of failing to score in their last two matches in the eighth finals. We can expect them to finally assert themselves, but there will be no goal scoring.
Cape Verde are not much worse off in terms of points scored. However, in the knockout stages of the tournament, the quality of the team will also be a factor and that is clearly playing in Senegal’s favour.
