Bayern lose key defensive figure again for no gain, 26-year-old stopper rejects new contract

A recurring mistake that Bayern Munich might regret. After last season, David Alaba left Bavaria for free, who has long been a key figure in Munich’s defence, and after this season, Niklas Süle will leave in exactly the same situation.

It was the summer of 2017 when Bayern Munich did not hesitate to send 20 million euros to Hoffenheim’s account for the arrival of Niklas Süle. At the time, he was one of the best Bundesliga defenders and a big future was predicted for him.

The now 26-year-old stopper lived up to expectations. When he is healthy, his place in the Bayern line-up is secure, and the same is true for the national team. For a long time he was linked with a possible move to England, but he always resisted. However, he could head abroad as early as the summer.

The German defender’s contract expires in the summer. Bayern have tried to extend it, but to no avail. Bavarian boss Oliver Kahn had to announce at a press conference that Süle will leave for free in the summer.

“We are responsible for the conditions we offer the players. It’s normal in this business that you don’t always agree with everyone,” Kahn did not blame the key defensive figure for refusing a contract.

It is worth noting that Transfermarkt now estimates Süle’s value at €35 million. Bayern could therefore at least get some money from his sale, but this way they will get nothing. Moreover, it will have to deal with who will replace him at the heart of the defensive line.

Foreign media agree that Chelsea should be in the running for the German defender, while Newcastle United could also be involved if they stay among the elite.

Süle has played 158 competitive games for Bayern so far, helping the club to win the Champions League in addition to the Bundesliga title.
