In the semi-final of the English Cup, Liverpool and Arsenal met in a goalless draw. The London club is extremely grateful for this draw, because they played almost seventy minutes without Granit Xhaka, who was sent off.
The sending off came after a big mistake by the Arsenal defence. Diogo Jota broke away from the defenders and raced into a clear goal scoring chance with only goalkeeper Ramsdale in front of him. Granit Xhaka was the only one who could save the day.
He wanted to kick the ball out in front of Jota, but clumsily and above all very dangerously kicked the ball into his opponent. The referee sent Xhaka off and the Gunners had to do without their midfielder. They responded well though, defending well all game.
The Swiss international was aware after the game that he had made the game very uncomfortable for his teammates by being so stupidly sent off. He apologised to them and also sent an apology to Arsenal fans via Instagram.
”I would like to apologise to everyone. I’m very proud of my team and the spirit they showed when they managed to keep a clean sheet,’ ‘ he said in the post.
Xhaka’s teammates also reacted to his post and tried to support him. They wrote to him, for example, saying that the clean sheet was mainly for him and the fans and that they were all in this together.
Arsenal play a derby with Tottenham this weekend. Xhaka, however, will miss this important match due to his sending off.
