The nineteenth-placed Premier League outfit desperately needs strengthening in almost every position. Media and football experts expect at least four reinforcements. If no new players join the club, Newcastle will almost certainly be relegated to the second tier.
Coach Howe may bring in four players from Arsenal in London. The leader of the defensive line should be Rob Holding, who is only the number 3 stopper in Arteta’s hierarchy, and would certainly get maximum playing time at Newcastle.
However, the fact remains that Arsenal are still in the game on three fronts and in the event of Holding’s departure to the north of England, the Gunners would have to look for a replacement.
The Magpies midfield should be revived by Egyptian Mohamed Elneny, who doesn’t get much space at the Emirates Stadium, hence a change of scenery would benefit the 29-year-old central midfielder.
However, Elneny is taking part in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON – ed.), so he would not be available for a Premier League game until next month. As well as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is currently representing Gabon.
The 32-year-old striker is being offered to other clubs both on loan and on a permanent transfer. Newcastle is the biggest favourite to acquire the former Borussia Dortmund player, as they have enough funds for the transfer and the salary demands of the player himself.
A cheaper and even riskier option would be Eddie Nketiah. The twenty-two-year-old spike striker gets almost no chances at Arsenal – he has only started three games in the English top flight this season.
The other three opportunities came in the EFL Cup, where he managed to score five goals. Moreover, the Gunners alumnus is only under contract until the end of the season and would be a very cheap option for Howe to complete the offensive line.
