On Friday, the semifinal matches of the men’s singles at the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the current season, will be played. Fans will be treated to a very interesting clash between Alcaraz and Djokovic, with the young Spaniard as the favourite.
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has only been beaten three times in the 2023 calendar year. The 20-year-old Spaniard has lost only to Norrie, Sinner and most recently Marozsan. He has left the court as a winner on 35 occasions.
At the French Open last year, he reached the quarter-finals, where he lost to Alexander Zverev after a four-set battle. So this year he will certainly improve on his best result at the top of the clay court season.
Alcaraz took on Cobolli, Daniel, Shapovalov, Musetti and Tsitsipas in succession. During his journey to the semi-finals, he lost only one set, a more unconvincing performance probably against his Greek opponent, whom he did not give the slightest chance.
Novak Djokovic is currently ranked second in the ATP rankings. However, if he manages to dominate the whole tournament, he would return to the top spot. However, his performance in France is not optimal.
The thirty-six year old Serbian has notched up three losses before the start of the French Open, winning five times. He has been much better on clay in the past years, but this year he was no match for Musetti, Lajovic and Rune.
He continues his inconsistent performances at the French Open. He won against Kovacevic, Fucsovics, Davidovich Fokina and Varillas without losing a set, and against Khachanov he won 3:1.
Interestingly, Djokovic has played five tiebreaks during the tournament – he managed to win all of them. However, it shows that the Serb’s form is not optimal, which an opponent like Alcaraz can definitely punish.
On Friday, the second match between the two players will take place. The first one was won by Alcaraz a year ago in Barcelona, now his triumph is also expected.
