What’s at stake in Tuesday’s Champions League? Real and Inter for top spot, Atlético on the brink

The Champions League is back on the scene. Some of Tuesday’s matches are being played out of obligation, but some are still very much on the line. Which matches are worth watching?

Group A

In this group, the top two teams have nothing to play for anymore, as they both have a clear promotion spot, with City in first place. Only the battle for third place and therefore the knockout stage of the Europa League will be contested. Leipzig will play Manchester City at home, Bruges will go to Paris.

Group B

Atlético Madrid is a regular participant in the knockout part, in 2014 and 2016 it even reached the final, a year later the semi-finals. Now the Colchoneros have a knockout game already in the group. To qualify, they must unconditionally beat Porto on its field and AC Milan must not beat Liverpool, or else the Rojiblancos would then have to have a better score.

Porto just need to not lose to Atlético to advance and at the same time Milan must not beat Liverpool. If they win, they don’t have to look at the result of the second leg. AC Milan must beat Liverpool and ideally hope for a draw in the second leg.

Group C

Group C is no longer about anything. Ajax are certain to qualify from first place, Sporting are also already assured of promotion thanks to their reciprocal games with Dortmund. Borussia have already secured the Europa League again, Besiktas are 100 percent last.

Group D

In the last group played on Tuesday’s schedule, it’s all about who advances from first place. Real Madrid are in a better position, playing at home and only needing a draw. Shockingly, Sherif Tiraspol came for third place and therefore the Europa League, beating Shakhtar and then sensationally beating Real Madrid.
