The fastest sending off in national football? Andorra was shorthanded against Poland from the 10th second
Poland managed to win 4-1 in Andorra on Friday night. However, a quick red card for one of the home players helped a lot. Ricardo Fernandez’s sending off may not have broken a record in football history, but it probably did at national level.
Poland managed to win 4-1 in Andorra on Friday night. However, a quick red card for one of the home players was a big help. The sending off of Ricardo Fernandez may not have broken a record in football history, but it probably did at national level.
The World Cup qualifying match between Andorra and Poland did not bring any major surprises. The visitors confirmed their role as favourites and outplayed their opponents in terms of play and results.
But if there is one thing that is very much on the table, it is a very quick red card for one of the home players.
After just ten seconds, Ricard Fernandez elbowed one of the Polish players in the face in a header and earned himself an immediate sending off. However, the referee only drew his card in the 21st second of the match.
It is certain that in the history of world football, this sending off will not even make the top five. After all, there have been footballers in the past who have received a red card without a single second having been played.
But this is probably a record in national football. In fact, no ranking of the fastest sending-offs in football can show a single red card in the national teams.
Yet Fernandez could easily be in the fastest ten.
