In an interview, Lionel Messi listed his favourites who he believes have a chance of winning the Champions League. The Argentine listed several teams, but left out his former club Barcelona.
Lionel Messi responded to a question about whether he thinks PSG can win the Champions League. “PSG has the ambition to win the Champions League and is very close to it. We are one of the main favourites, but we are not the only ones,” Lionel Messi told the BeIN Sport station.
PSG have a really good chance of winning the Champions League. The summer has seen a huge strengthening of the squad, with Messi, Ramos, Hakimi, Donnarumma, Wijnaldum and Danilo all arriving in Paris. The question is whether the team from PSG will be so cohesive that it will reign supreme in Europe.
“Everyone talks about PSG, but the other teams have been together for many years and have signed good players. I’m thinkingof clubs like Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Atlético or Chelsea.”
What is interesting, however, is that Messi did not mention his former Barcelona in his selection. The latter is indeed not in good shape and football experts cannot imagine that it would really dominate the Champions League. Still, it is surprising.
Even Real Madrid did not make the cut. On the other hand, Messi might have mentioned Atlético Madrid, where his good friend Luis Suárez is based.
Even so, Messi knows that Champions League matches can sometimes be tricky. “It’s a very tough competition and the best team doesn’t always win. A lot of things have to go right for you to succeed. Everything is possible here,” the Argentine footballer added.
PSG is on track to qualify for the Champions League playoffs. After four rounds, they are in second place four points ahead of third-placed Brugge. In their next game they will face the leading team from Manchester City.
