West Ham scalp the other Manchester team in the English League Cup! Guardiola’s Manchester City overpowered on penalties!
The paper assumptions spoke clearly. Although West Ham are in very decent form, Manchester City were expected to advance. However, Guardiola and his squad did not go further than the eighth round this year and will not win the Carabao Cup winner’s trophy for the fifth time in a row.
Tomas Soucek appeared in the starting lineup for the home Hammers, while some of the mainstays such as midfielder Rice, striker Antonio and goalkeeper Fabianski were given the night off. The visitors also fielded a strong eleven, with De Bruyne, Sterling and Mahrez on the pitch.
In the first half, the visitors had the upper hand, as most of the football public expected. It’s not often that Manchester City are under sustained, heavy pressure in games. However, in certain passages of the first forty-five minutes, there were a couple of times when the Citizens were drawn into a defensive block for longer.
Noble had a chance, but his shot was covered by substitute Ederson between the three posts by Steffen. City were threatening from breaks, with Mahrez, Sterling and Palmer getting into firing positions.
In the second half, the visitors pressed the home side even more, but neither Foden, Sterling or any other player in light blue could get through. On the other side, Soucek shot twice from the edge of the box, but each time inaccurately.
The match thus went to penalties, which at this stage of the Cup immediately follow normal time.
The first one was missed by Foden, who headed his attempt off the bar of Areola’s goal. Noble, Bowen, Dawson, Cresswell and Benrahma all scored for the home side. West Ham can now celebrate their progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup!
Will the Czech trio of Soucek, Coufal and King be able to enjoy the trophy? They are well placed to do so, although there are still stronger teams in the pool. Maybe this year they will succeed.
