Cristiano Ronaldo left Juventus Turin at the end of August after three years to join Manchester United. A club where he literally became a star. However, his former teammate, Giorgio Chiellini, has expressed an opinion that many fans may not be happy with.
Almost throughout the summer transfer window, there was speculation that Ronaldo would soon leave Juventus. However, it wasn’t until the end of the summer that his return to Manchester United was finally confirmed.
The transfer sum collected by the Italian club was 15 million euros. His former teammate, however, expressed the opinion that Juventus would have benefited if he had done so earlier.
“We had reached a point where Cristiano needed new motivation and a new team that could fit him again,” Chiellini said in an interview with DAZN.
“If he finds that motivation and new energy, he will become a decisive part of the lineup again. Just as he showed in the three years he spent with us,” he continued.
“Juventus are currently in a rejuvenation phase. If Ronaldo had stayed, it would have been an added value and we would have been happy to take advantage of it, but maybe he was thinking more about the present than the future,” he adds.
Despite this opinion, however, Chiellini goes on to say that it would actually have been better if he had done things differently and left earlier. The fact that he left the Italian giant only on August 28 and only speculated all summer is said to have damaged Juventus in some way.
Based on his words, they reportedly paid the price in points. If he had left during the summer, at least at the beginning of August, they could have been better prepared for his departure and the start of the season.
The fact is that Juventus started the new season woefully, failing to win any of their opening four Serie A matches. However, from an objective point of view, can one man really be blamed for the team’s poor form?
Ronaldo has played 134 games for the Italian big club across all competitions, scoring 101 goals and adding 22 assists. In their jersey, he has twice rejoiced in winning the league title, twice lifted the trophy for the Italian Super Cup winners above his head and they won the Coppa Italia in the 2020/21 season.
