Perhaps few knew Pedri before the start of last season when he joined the Catalans from Las Palmas. However, the 20/21 season will forever remain a breakthrough season for one of the world’s greatest talents.
He played a whopping 53 games for Barcelona last season (the most of any senior team player), in which he managed to win the Spanish Cup.
In the summer, he was called up to the Spanish national team to represent his country at the Euros. Pedri was named the best young player at the tournament and contributed greatly to Luis Enrique’s selection reaching the semi-finals.
He played an incredible 74 games (the most of any player in the European leagues) in an extremely gruelling season that ended with a silver medal at the Olympic Games. A photo of him entering the match with a very tired expression went viral.
Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman, of course, takes a lot of credit for his progress, and he was not afraid to move him into the starting lineup.
Pedri also found himself on the 30-man shortlist for the 2021 Ballon d’Or, but ironically he was the only Barcelona player there
The new contract includes a mandatory exit clause in Spain, worth exactly 1 billion euros. The official contract extension will be signed on Friday 15 October.
