Why didn’t Kucka kneel? I respect everybody equally, I never exalted myself above anyone, he says
Juraj Kucka, the ex-Spartan midfielder, has caused a big stir in the British Isles. The Watford player did not kneel in the match against Leeds, which almost all footballers in the Premier League do to support the fight against racism. Kucka has now explained the reason.
Juraj Kucka, the ex-Spartan midfielder, has caused a big stir in the British Isles. The Watford player did not kneel in the match against Leeds, which almost all footballers in the Premier League do to support the fight against racism. Kucka has now explained the reason.
Since June last year, Premier League footballers have been kneeling in support of the Black Lives Matter anti-racism movement. But several players are now refusing to kneel.
One of them is Slovakian midfielder Juraj Kucka, who caused an uproar on social media with his action. Why did he do it?
“I am fundamentally against racism in the world! I didn’t kneel at the last match because I respect everyone equally, and I never elevated myself above anyone or condemned them just because they are a different colour,” Kucka wrote on Instagram.
“I understand the gesture of kneeling as a sign of fighting racism, and those who do so. But my decision is this. Thank you for respecting me. Stop racism!” he added.
The question now is whether more footballers will join him because kneeling no longer makes much sense and only divides society.
Many players take it as a routine, as Wilfried Zaha, a dark-skinned footballer who also no longer kneels, has said.
