Bayer 04 Leverkusen faced Mainz on Saturday and managed to defend their 1:0 result at home. More interesting, however, is the scorer of that goal, the young Florian Wirtz. The German-born midfielder is one of the greatest talents of our time. He proved it in the last match when he broke the record set in 2004 with his goal.
The German football club Bayer Leverkusen has been playing in the top German competition since the 1963/64 season. In recent years, it has been quite successful, regularly fighting for the top spot in the Bundesliga, and its name is also frequently mentioned in the Champions League.
Many current football stars started their careers at the BayArena in western Germany. Names like Lucio, Michael Ballack, Toni Kroos, they all got their start playing here.
The latest world-class talent to leave Leverkusen in 2020 is Kai Havertz. The club he transferred to is Chelsea of London, who sent £70 million back for him.
It has barely been a year since Havertz’s transfer and it seems that Leverkusen have already found a replacement for him. That would be 18-year-old Florian Wirtz.
The young offensive midfielder reached an interesting milestone in his career on Saturday when he scored his tenth Bundesliga goal. He became the youngest player ever to do so. He even surpassed Lukas Podolski, who had held the record since 2004.
Thus, Germany has another great talent on the rise and if Wirtz continues to perform like this, we can expect another football mega-transfer in the future.
Leverkusen is then in second place behind the sovereign Bayern Munich thanks to his and Schick’s goals (both have scored 4 goals in the current Bundesliga season).
Both of them will then be able to prove themselves this week when they travel to Scotland to face Celtic in the Europa League. That will be followed by two league games against Bielefeld and Bayern.
