Francesco Totti is celebrating and so is at least the red part of Rome. The legendary striker celebrated his 45th birthday on Monday.
AS Roma, the club to which he dedicated his entire life, has gone to great lengths to mark the occasion, posting a video on its club channels and social media to recall the iconic moments of the King of Rome.
Totti, by the way, has scored countless beautiful goals for Rome, having defended its colours since he was 13 years old. He has arguably become the biggest legend in the club’s history. He ended his career in 2017.
Now 45 years old, the Italian has played the most games in the club’s history (785). He is also the top scorer with 307 goals scored and the top passer with 186 assists.
In terms of individual statistics, he is also among the top in Serie A. In the history of the Italian top flight, only Silvio Piola (274 goals) has scored more goals than Totti (250 goals).
But if there’s one thing Totti deserves that he hasn’t got, it’s regular success. He may have won the league once, the Italian Cup twice and the Italian Super Cup twice in Rome, but a player of his calibre would certainly deserve more trophies.
He did, however, win the World Cup with the national team in 2006, winning the most valuable trophy on the national field. Ten years earlier, he celebrated victory at the Little Euro.
He then became the top scorer of Serie A once, was named the best player of the competition twice and was the best domestic player in the top Italian league five times.
His loyalty to the club is all the more valuable. He could have won trophy after trophy at any major club, but instead he chose loyalty and dedicated his life to AS Roma. In short, admirable.
