An even more perfect Bayern? It can be done! Nagelsmann has made the best start in the club’s history, yet still demands improvement
Bayern started the new season with a new coach, with the talented perfectionist Julian Nagelsmann taking over from Hansi Flick. Flick had been incredibly successful, so it was not too much to expect that the 33-year-old coach could replace him completely perfectly straight away. But it is happening.
Bayern started the new season with a new coach, with the talented perfectionist Julian Nagelsmann taking over from Hansi Flick. Flick had been incredibly successful, so it was not too much to expect that the 33-year-old coach could replace him completely perfectly straight away. But it is happening.
When Hansi Flick finished his time as Bayern coach, there was a certain sadness in Munich. And no wonder. Although the current national team coach had already been head coach for a relatively short time, he had won everything there was to win.
He turned the Bavarian team into an almost unstoppable machine that not only got results but also entertained with its play.
The talented Julian Nagelsmann had and still has a tough task ahead of him. He has to replace him fully. It was not expected that he would succeed right from the start, yet he did.
It didn’t look too fabulous in the run-up. Of the four friendlies before the new season, Bayern didn’t win a single one, losing 3:2 to Cologne, 2:0 to Mönchengladbach and 3:0 to Napoli. Only against Ajax did they draw 2-2.
It was impossible to say that there was much optimism in the Munich giant’s fan camp before the season. When the Bavarians failed to win the first league round at Mönchengladbach (1:1), it did not add to the positivity.
But it was the first and also the last hesitation in competitive matches this season. Since then, Bayern have played 9 matches and won all but one of them in dominant fashion.
Nagelsmann has therefore made the best start to his tenure as Bayern’s head coach in the club’s history. He holds two spectacular records.
No Bayern coach has managed to win 9 times in his first 10 competitive matches. The other record is goal difference. The Bavarians have scored 46 goals (4.6 goals per game) and conceded only 6. In addition, they were able to enjoy the German Super Cup.
It could be argued that Munich did not face any difficult opponents. But the fact is that the Bundesliga is still extremely underrated and Bayern have already managed to beat Dortmund (3::1), Leipzig (4::1), two of their biggest rivals. Then in the Champions League, they destroyed Barcelona 3: 0 and didn’t allow a single shot on target.
So Nagelsmann is doing very well. Even players that his predecessor was unable to match are doing well. A good example is the shining Leroy Sané. By all accounts, Bayern will have to be considered one of the biggest favourites to win the Champions League.
And would the talented coach be extremely satisfied? On the one hand, he has shown his joy, but he still asks more from his players. “It’s never easy to maintain maximum concentration. There are still many things that can be better,” he expressed after the 5: 0 win over Dynamo Kiev.
So if it seemed that Bayern couldn’t get much better, the opposite is true. And as Nagelsmann’s statement makes it seem, the potential is extreme. Will we see a Bavarian dynasty?
