Is the end of Ronald Koeman on the Barcelona bench near? Everything points to it. The Spanish club has even already contacted four possible successors for the post of head coach.
Barcelona are currently presenting themselves in a miserable form, which is fully manifested in the Champions League matches. That the Catalan club was not enough for Bayern Munich was already expected before the match itself, but Barcelona also got three goals from Benfica, to whom they lost so ignominiously.
Combined with lacklustre performances in the league, the club’s management is running out of patience. No wonder they are already looking for a new successor.
According to the Spanish media, Barcelona have contacted four coaches. The first option is Xavi Hernández. A legend of the club, the Catalan club was already interested in him before Koeman, but Xavi has rejected all offers so far. Even so, Xavi should once again be a priority for Barcelona.
Roberto Martínez has been contacted as the next coach. The man who has led the Belgian national team since 2016. Martínez would then have to give up his place with the national team like Koeman did before joining Barcelona.
However, Martínez cannot be expected to leave his successful mission with the national team and move to Barcelona, which is in decline.
The third candidate could be Argentine Marcelo Gallardo. Gallardo is currently coaching River Plate, and although he is doing well with the club, an engagement at Barcelona would be something else for him. It’s also hard to say how he would be received by Barcelona fans given that he is not a very well-known name.
However, the same cannot be said for the last coach contacted, which is Andrea Pirlo. Pirlo’s only coaching experience was a stint at Juventus. There he was quite successful, but soon Massimiliano Allegri took his place and Pirlo is currently without a contract. Quite understandably, he has attracted the attention of the Barcelona management.
