Will there be standing room in the Premier League again? Pilot project to start next year
Several leading clubs in English football’s top competition have backed the idea of bringing back standing room. Unlike in the past, however, under strict safety conditions to ensure that the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989 is not repeated.
Several leading clubs in English football’s top competition have backed the idea of bringing back standing room. Unlike in the past, however, under strict safety conditions to ensure that the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989 is not repeated. 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives when the stands collapsed.
Since 1994, the Premier League has been standing room only and for a long time it looked like it would be no different.
So a pilot project due to start next year will cause a major change in modern football history. The institutions making the safety rules will release more details in January next year.
Railings to the seating areas have already been installed at several Premier League stadiums to improve safety. Safety schemes will be based on the experience of Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge to ensure the return of standing places at the vast majority of stadiums.
The first British club to return seats with railings was Celtic in Scotland. In July 2016, Celtic Park created conditions for 2,600 fans.
Premier League stadiums are visited by millions of fans each season. With the conditions set, the move is definitely the right one.
