In Germany, the players played the game almost naked! The World Cup in Qatar plays a role in this
That this is a very unconventional way of protesting, at least as far as the football environment is concerned? Probably yes, but it will be much more important if this protest fulfils its purpose. And what are all the actors actually protesting against?
That this is a very unconventional way of protesting, at least as far as the football environment is concerned? Probably yes, but it will be much more important if this protest fulfils its purpose. And what are all the actors actually protesting against?
Gerrit Starczewski – the man behind it all. The conceptual artist and filmmaker has created another work of art, but this time it is truly unconventional.
And what exactly were these players of the newly formed team protesting against? Mainly against the commercialisation of sport.
The footballers, who wore only football boots and socks, were part of an art project called Nacktionalmannschaft (Naked Representation – editor’s note).
Thirty-four-year-old artist and filmmaker Starczewski was behind it all. He wanted to express his opposition to the World Cup in Qatar next year.
The World Cup in Qatar is to be held for business rather than for the fans themselves. And many, especially the fans themselves, do not like that.
“There’s never been anything like this before – a team in jerseys against a naked 11,” Starczewski said of the unconventional match.
The match attracted about 300 people in Duisburg over the weekend. And we can already say that this event has a far-reaching impact – not only the German magazine Der Spiegel wrote about it, but also, for example, the British newspaper The Sun or The Times.
