Leverkusen got off to a great start. Already in the third minute they took the lead. And it was Patrik Schick. He received a pass from Palacios, but didn’t get a chance to finish from the Augsburg defenders.
However, Iago was kind enough to put the ball in his own net instead of Schick. And that it was a beautiful long ball!
In the 14th minute, the visitors scored another own goal. Niederlechner sent the ball into the net after an opponent’s centre. In the 30th minute, however, he also managed to hit the right post and reduced the score to 2:1.
Diaby could have increased the score to 3: 1 after a great assist from Schick, but one of the Leverkusen players was shown to be playing with his hand on the video and the goal was disallowed.
In the 75th minute, however, Schick officially made his mark. He took the ball on the counter-attack, took all the responsibility and sent the ball into the net. Finally, Leverkusen could enjoy a two-goal lead.
It was an important goal as Augsburg dramatised the game and managed to put Leverkusen under pressure at times. However, this goal froze the improving performance of their opponents. Wirtz could have increased the score to 4-1 in the 82nd minute.
Schick could have scored once more at the end of the match, but only hit the crossbar. Nevertheless, he earned a perfect 8.6 rating from WhoScored, which means he was the best player of the match.
