Slovakia, with four players from the Fortuna Liga, will face an important World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday. But nothing easy awaits the Slovaks on the soil of Slovenia, even Jan Oblak and co. would like to finally make it to the big tournament.
Slovenia can’t be satisfied with the group so far. After three rounds they have only three points, they lost important points in a 0:1 loss to Cyprus and they are only fourth in the table.
Slovakia is not much better off. It has five points, but draws with Cyprus and especially Malta could play a key role in the final showdown. They are third in the table so far.
Jan Oblak, one of the best goalkeepers of the last decade, is the mainstay of the home team. Other names worth mentioning are Josip Ilicic, Benjamin Sesko, Jasmin Kurtic and Andraz Sporar.
Slovakia will rely on Ivan Schranz, who leads the Fortuna Liga scorers’ table with five goals and two assists. Watford’s central midfielder Juraj Kucka has also been impressive in the early rounds of the Premier League.
Slovenia has an excellent defence, having scored more than one goal in only one of their last ten games.
Slovakia will need Schranz’s goals, having failed to score in three of their last four games (in which the Slavia striker has not played).
Considering the good form of Schranz, Kucka or Dávid Hancock, I think the Slovaks will not lose.
