Conference league
The Czech coefficient got an injection and hope! Where do we stand compared to our competitors?
By the 2022/2023 season, Czech football has been dealt a hand. Only 4 teams will be sent to European football, but now the fight is on for the future, specifically for the 2023/2024 season.
By the 2022/2023 season, Czech football has been dealt a hand. Only 4 teams will be sent to European football, but now the fight is on for the future, specifically for the 2023/2024 season. Czech teams are fighting for the coveted 15th place in the national coefficients table, which ensures that 5 teams will be heading to European competitions like this year.
Our arch rivals are currently Croatia, Cyprus, Turkey. How does it look in this unclear situation? The current table looks like this!
A strong competitor in Turkey has all 5 teams in the game so far, but in yesterday’s Conference League playoffs both Trabzonspor lost at home to AS Rome and Sivasspor lost to FC Copenhagen and may only have three teams left.
In the Europa League play-offs, Galatasaray drew with Denmark’s Randers and Fenerbahce only won 1-0 at home against the unpleasant HJK Hesinki. From Turkey, only the champions Besiktas (who will be in the Champions League) have absolute certainty of the group stage.
Croatia has two irons in the fire, in the form of Dinamo Zagreb and Rijeka. Zagreb have been tipped for the prestigious Champions League, for which Croatia would collect a valuable 4 points.
However, the Moldovan outsider Sheriff Tiraspol won the first leg of the Champions League play-off 3-0 and it looks like Dinamo will prove to be the only one in the Europa League. Rijeka is playing for the Conference League with Greek PAOK and took a decent 1:1 result from Greece for the rematch.
The Cypriots are playing Omonia and Anorthosis Famagusta. The former team is fighting for the Europa League and won their opening match against Antwerp of Belgium 4: 2. Anorthosis is fighting for the weakest European competition (Conference League) and the first match against Israel’s Hapoel Beersheva ended 0:0.
In any case, Czech football has a relatively good chance to have 4 teams in the European Cups’ main groups. This could give us a big competitive advantage over most (even the higher ranked ones).
