Another step forward for VAR! In the Netherlands, even fans in stadiums will see the footage the referee examines

Although the VAR system has been used in football for some time, it still faces considerable criticism. Largely due to the lack of transparency and the fact that every detail is suddenly being dissected. But in the Netherlands, at least, they are taking a big step forward with transparency.

As mentioned, VAR is not exactly popular with fans. On the contrary. You can often see banners where supporters ask for the abolition of video refereeing.

There are many reasons for this. At least for the fans in the stadium, the fact that they do not have footage on the basis of which the referees can change their decisions is annoying compared to the viewers at the TV screens.

And that is what will no longer be the case in the Dutch Eredivisie, the top league competition there, as of this coming weekend. For the time being, all the screens in the stadiums had at most a sign saying what the referee was actually examining.

From the upcoming round, however, every fan in the stadium will see the footage that the referee will have available. They will be able to understand immediately why the verdict was reached.

However, the fans will only see the footage after the referee has made his decision. The club hosting the match will decide on the use of the footage. However, there is apparently no reason why some footage should not be used while others should.

This is a good step, which could be taken as an example in the top five European leagues, or even here. However, given the stadium facilities and finances, we will probably have to wait a few years for this in the Czech Republic.
