Premier League winner Manchester City and FA Cup winner Leicester faced off in the Community Shield Super Cup, decided by Kelechi Iheanacho’s single goal.
Just before the start of the top English football league, the winner of the league and the domestic cup traditionally face off. This year, the champion Manchester City challenged the Leicester Foxes. The match was very even and was decided by a goal at the very end.
As some players are not yet warmed up after the holidays, neither team came out at full strength. Here is a look at the starting line-ups.
The game was scoreless until the 89th minute. Then Citizens defender Nathan Aké fouled Kelechi Iheanacho. The fouled player put the ball on the penalty spot and converted the penalty. This late goal decided his team’s victory.
Manchester won possession with a slight advantage, keeping the ball for 57% of the game. On shots Manchester City also won, they shot 10 times but only hit the goal three times, while Leicester had 7 shots and five of them were aimed between the posts. However, only the one from a penalty went through.
Interestingly, new big signing Jack Grealish made his debut. He came on after about an hour of play. Another interesting fact is that Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City coach, was shown a yellow card for unsporting behaviour.
So Leicester enter the new Premier League season feeling better.
