Piqué was upset after Spain’s loss: Penalties are unfair, the first has the advantage. What would he change?
The first semi-final of Euro 2020 between Italy and Spain came down to penalty kicks. There, the Italians were stronger and after the failure of Dani Olmo and Alvaro Morata, the Spanish go home. But the shootout didn’t go well for Gerard Pique, Barcelona’s stopper.

Gerard Piqué played 103 games for the Spanish national team, but he retired after the 2018 World Cup. However, he has not stopped being a fan.
After Spain’s elimination after penalty kicks with Italy came, he complained on Twitter about the penalty system.
“It is no coincidence that in the four penalty shootouts of both the Euros and the Copa América, the team that scored first won. The statistics say that the first team has more options and in a tournament like this it doesn’t seem fair that the draw decides that you start at a disadvantage,” Piqué came up with a new idea.
Fans immediately began to hotly debate, many of them not understanding how the Barcelona defender would like to solve it.
“What would be the solution? He could shoot first for the home team. And in tournaments when it’s neutral, how do you solve it? Whoever is the best placed in the group shoots first? (In this case, Italy)” asked a Piqué fan.
“I think the best format would be ABBAABBAAB. That way if the teams don’t score they take turns. It changes a lot whether they start or finish,” Piqué said.
