Italy versus England. That’s the line-up for the final of this year’s European Championship. Italy went into the final with just three goals conceded. It won all six matches, four of them in normal time. According to the experts, it has been the most consistent performer of all the teams in the tournament and will therefore be the favourite in the final.
It was England who got their first ever goal at the Euros in their win over Denmark. Up front, however, they struggled, with Harry Kane only waking up in the play-offs and Phil Foden not waking up at all.
Italy’s best player was Leonardro Spinazzola until the quarter-finals, but the skilful left back was injured against Belgium and finished the tournament. Federico Chiesa, Nicolo Barella and both stoppers Georgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci also performed well.
On the England side, Luke Shaw continues to have his best season of his career, having already assisted three times at the championship. Defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips and teammates Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish have also been praised.
Italy will miss the aforementioned Spinazzola, while England will be complete.
If Italy wins the final, they will break the record for most goals scored at a single Euro. It has never scored more than 12 goals in this tournament.
Moreover, England has not been successful against the Italians for a long time, having last beaten them in a competitive match in 1977.
Given the form of the Italians, I think the Italians will win the game. Given the nice odds, I recommend betting on a decision win, meaning that you will be credited with the win even if the Italians are successful in extra time or on penalties.
