England took the lead in the second minute. Kieran Trippier’s centre found Luke Shaw and sent the ball to the near post. In the eighth minute, Lorenzo Insigne fired in from a direct kick but missed.
After that, the game calmed down a lot and the chances were fewer until Insigne shot from distance again in the 28th minute, but missed again. Six minutes later Federico Chiesa came close to equalising, but his left-footed shot missed the near post by inches.
The final push by the Italians did not lead to anything, so it was 1:0 to England.
After the change of sides, Insigne tried for the umpteenth time from a direct kick, but this time he did not hit the target. In the 62nd minute, Chiesa took another dangerous shot, but Jordan Pickford had to make a good save.
Four minutes later, the game was level. Leonardo Bonucci knocked the ball into the net in an awkward situation. After that it was more of a struggle, the Italians were a bit more active, but they couldn’t convert it into a second goal. So it went to extra time.
In the 97th minute, Kalvin Phillips shot from distance, but just missed the left post. The rest of the overtime didn’t offer any more chances and the game went to penalties.
In the first series both shooters scored, Andrea Belotti failed in the second, Marcus Rashford in the third and Jadon Sancho in the fourth. In the fifth, Jorginho missed but as Bukayo Saka didn’t score either, the Italians became champions.
