The Danes won an important match against Russia (4:1) and thanks to Finland’s loss to Belgium, they are now in second place, despite only three points. The Russians, on the other hand, say goodbye to the championship.
The Danes were more active from the start, but the Russian defence was excellent. The first chance of the match came in the 17th minute when Aleksandr Golovin hit the centre of Kasper Schmeichel’s goal.
Denmark didn’t get a shot off until the 29th minute, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s shot going just wide. Five minutes later, Golovin tried again, this time missing the target.
In the 38th minute, the Danes took the lead. Mikkel Damsgaard miscued the ball on his right foot and cleared the right post. That was the last chance of the first half and Denmark went into the box with a 1:0 lead.
The second half opened with a goal for 2: 0. Roman Zobnin’s pointless little home found Yussuf Poulsen, who had no problem beating the goalkeeper. The complication for the Danes came in the 68th minute when the referee awarded a penalty after a foul by Jannik Vestergaard.
Artyom Dzjuba took the ball and converted uncompromisingly. In the 76th minute, Daniel Wass tried from a direct kick, but failed to find the Russian goalkeeper. Three minutes later, he could have celebrated. Andreas Christensen headed the ball in from outside the box and put Matvei Safonov through.
Suddenly the Danes were everywhere. Safonov fished the ball out of the net for the fourth time in the 82nd minute, this time he was fouled by Joakim Maehle. The 4-1 win put the Nordic team into the eight-finals, as the Finns fell to Belgium.
