André Onana is just one step away from a move to Arsenal!
Earlier this year, Cameroon national goalkeeper André Onana was banned from all football activities for one year by UEFA. An anti-doping check on 30 October last year revealed traces of the banned substance furosemide in the 24-year-old goalkeeper’s urine.
Earlier this year, Cameroon national goalkeeper André Onana was banned from all football activities for one year by UEFA. An anti-doping check on 30 October last year revealed traces of the banned substance furosemide in the 24-year-old goalkeeper’s urine. Halfway through the punishment, it looks like the non-playing goalkeeper will be changing venues.
Onana was one of the best players to emerge from the academy of the legendary Samuel Eto’o, who wanted to help the development of football in his native country. In 2010, Onana was scouted by the famous La Masia and so the young goalkeeper moved to Europe.
However, he failed to make more of a mark in Barcelona’s academy, following the path of Mauro Icardi, for example, who had also left the academy and was looking for his footballing fortune elsewhere. Onan was chosen by the famous Ajax Amsterdam, who paid 150,000 euros for him in the summer of 2015.
There he became an unwavering leader over time and is now one of the world’s elite goalkeepers. However, his career is now hampered by a disciplinary punishment that bans him from all football activities until the end of this year.
This situation, however, plays into the hands of potential suitors for the young Cameroonian’s services. His current value is €30 million, but his contract at Ajax expires next year and unless he is successful in his appeal, he will not be able to play in a professional match until February next year.
In the last few days, there have been reports that Arsenal are ready to pay around £8 million if Onana succeeds in his appeal, otherwise the transfer fee should not exceed £2 million. The goalkeeper himself is said to have reached an agreement with the Gunners and it all depends on the opinion of the court, which takes place this week.
This would give Arsenal an interesting alternative for German goalkeeper Leno. If the Gunners manage to get Onana, who do you think should be number one next year?
