Carragher: Everton can’t celebrate their rescue. With its financial capabilities, it must play higher

The Liverpool derby will still be on next season! Everton did the job in the last round of the Premier League, beating Bournemouth to save themselves. In any case, the legend of city rival Liverpool FC warns that there is certainly nothing to celebrate.

There were three teams in contention for 17th place in the final round of the Premier League. Leeds had the toughest position, as they were the only team to lose, giving them not even a theoretical chance to save themselves. They fell to Tottenham 1: 4 at home.

For a long time Leicester held the position guaranteeing their stay among the elite. They took the lead at home against West Ham in the first half and then increased it to 2:0. The Hammers eventually reduced it to 1:2, but even the triumph was not enough for the Foxes.

Everton had everything in their hands. It was already clear before the game that if they won against Bournemouth, they would save themselves and Leicester and Leeds would fall. That’s what happened, Abdoulaye Doucouré’s second-half strike decided the game.

“I was delighted that there was such an atmosphere inside Goodison Park that the fans couldn’t celebrate. I’m from the city and Everton haven’t had a proper success for a long time. To see them two years in a row like this is terrible,” Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

Although Carragher mentions that there was no celebration, the fans in the stands and the players were euphoric. In any case, the players quickly calmed down and went into the bowels of the stadium.

Apparently Sean Dyche’s charges realised that rescue was far from a success given the squad. Before the season the management spent big money on Neal Maupay, Dwight McNeill, James Tarkowski and Amadou Onana.

Yet this season ended even worse than last year. Last season, Everton also came to the rescue, managing to do so in the penultimate round when they turned the game against Crystal Palace from 0-2 to 3-2 at home.

“When I hear players say they have hit rock bottom in terms of mentality and determination, it’s embarrassing. Everton can’t be in these positions with the squad and the finances they have. I understand the players are relieved but they must not celebrate too much,” Carragher added.
