Inter Milan made it through the first semi-final of the Champions League against their rivals AC Milan, beating them 2-0. The Nerazzurri took the home side by surprise with their overwhelming start to the match, with coach Simone Inzaghi regretting that his charges did not score more goals.
AC Milan fans started the match with a wonderful choreo, but after that it was just a show by Inter.
In the 8th minute, Calhanoglu’s centre came down to the foot of Džeko, who opened the scoring with a left-footed shot. In the 11th minute, it was 2-0 when Mkhitaryan cut through an open home defence like a knife through butter to score.
The AC Milan defenders didn’t know where their heads were at and could have scored for the third time. Calhanoglu’s shot ended up on the bar, Mkhitaryan’s follow-up was headed out by Maignan to Barella, but he shot over.
“I’m very happy, we played an extraordinary first half, we could have scored more than two goals. We know we have the advantage of playing at home in six days, but it’s not the first double match we’ve played in Europe and we’ll need a big effort to make our dream come true,” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi told a news conference.
“Yesterday I asked for heart and head, everyone gave a great performance and only then can you give such a performance. Now it is right to rejoice, but we are aware that we are still a little bit short,” Inzaghi added.
The Nerazzurri face Sassuolo at the weekend and the Inter coach has indicated that he will save some tired and injured players for the Champions League semi-final rematch.
On Tuesday, the Black and Blue’s players will have a home environment, with the San Siro turning into the Giuseppe Meazza and the stands being mostly Nerazzurri.
