Manchester City defeated Everton in the 36th round of the Premier League. Ilkay Gündogan scored two goals and an assist to give them a 3-0 victory. However, his contract expires in the summer. Will he extend his seven-year stay in Manchester or try a new career?
The German midfielder with Turkish roots is once again showing how valuable he is to Pep Guardiola, even if he may not be starting as much as other teammates. This is especially true in key games.
Last year, he helped turn a 0:2 to 3:2 draw against Aston Villa with two goals in the last round of the season, and this year, as the Citizens begin their chase for Arsenal, he is proving his experience and is one of Manchester City’s key players at this stage of the competition.
In the last three games, Gündogan has a 2+2 record. In terms of overall stats, he has scored nine goals across all competitions this season, to which he has added six assists.
The experienced midfielder is now thirty-two years old, however, he is one of the players who mature like wine with age.
However, after the end of this season, Gündogan’s contract expires. Negotiations are still ongoing between him and the Manchester club to extend it, but a serious bidder has stepped in.
Barcelona are very interested in the midfielder. Although the latter is largely restricted in the transfer market, Gündogan would come as a free agent, so he would only burden the budget with his salary.
He wouldn’t get the kind of money he gets in England, but if the Blaugranas want to lure him into their ranks, they need to slap themselves in the pocket.
Moreover, he has won everything he could in Manchester apart from the Champions League (which he is far from this year), so the question arises whether he would like to try a new challenge.
Citizens fans are hoping that the German midfielder will agree a new contract with the club, and that they will see him at the Etihad stadium for a few more years.
Gündogan is not a player you hear about in the papers every week, however he is an important part of the Citizens squad. No one can appreciate that better than the fans of the blue and white team from Manchester. So we will have to wait until the summer for the climax of this saga.
