Vinícius was once again the hero of Real Madrid fans when he opened the scoring in the first Champions League semi-final with a beautiful shot from outside the box. He has been a constant threat to City’s defence, proving once again what exceptional form he has this season.
It was supposed to be a battle between two of the best teams in the world and possibly even the best nine. Ahead of the first Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Manchester City, most football fans were expecting a flurry of goals from Karim Benzema or Erling Haaland.
In the end, however, it was Vinicius Jr. who stole the spotlight for himself and was a permanent threat to the defence of Pep Guardiola’s charges. Moreover, he scored the opening goal of the entire competition in the first half.
After Camavinga ran the length of the pitch after combining with Modric, it was the young Brazilian who took the ball from the French midfielder. He then sent the ball into the net with a beautiful shot behind the whitewash.
It was his seventh goal in this Champions League season and he added six assists. Together with Haaland, he thus tops the competition’s productivity table, as the Norwegian recorded twelve goals and one assist.
The battle for the team and individual statistics is now at its peak and both 22-year-old players are showing phenomenal form. For the Brazilian ball wizard, it was the tenth game in a row in which he provided his team with a goal or an assist.
In these ten games, he has scored four goals and an incredible ten assists. The last time he came out point-blank was in Real’s loss at Camp Nou on 19 March. In the final phase of the season, he is helping his team to fight for important trophies with great performances.
Although Real are already out of contention for the league title, Vinícius’ assist at the weekend helped his team to win the Spanish Cup. Then, as early as next week Wednesday, he will have the chance to be involved in his team’s next run to the King of Europe title in a rematch at the Etihad Stadium.
