How’s Schick? Chances of him making it to this season are minimal, admits club

After a season of life came a season of horror. Patrik Schick didn’t exactly shine twice this season. When he did play, he tended to burn chances. Most of the time, though, he’s wasted. How is he now?

Patrik Schick had an excellent season last season. He followed up a successful European Championships, where he was joint top scorer with Cristiano Ronaldo, and he took Leverkusen to the Champions League with his goals.

Only Robert Lewandowski (35 goals) did better in the league last season, with the Czech striker even surpassing Erling Haaland (22 goals) with 24 goals in the Bundesliga.

Schick has been talked about as one of the best strikers in Europe and there has been speculation of interest from various big clubs. But Schick signed a new and improved contract at Leverkusen, hoping to help develop the club’s potential.

But after a season of a lifetime came the flop. Leverkusen have not fared well at all since the start of this season and it looked like they would be fighting for top-flight affiliation instead of fighting for Europe. At least until Xabi Alonso arrived on the coaching bench.

The Spanish strategist managed to lift the team up and now we find Leverkusen in a solid sixth place. If the teams ahead of him lose and, on the other hand, Bayer are 100% in the last rounds, they could theoretically contend for the Champions League.

But all in all, Schick hasn’t helped. He has played 24 competitive games this season, scoring only 4 goals. Moreover, the last time we saw him in action was at the beginning of March. But he’s been out since then.

And that he should make it to the end of the season? It doesn’t look too promising. “Patrik has made some progress, but it’s definitely not a breakthrough. He’s still getting himself together and undergoing further treatment,” Simon Rolfes, the club’s general manager, assessed Schick’s progress with the muscle injury to Kicker.

The Czech striker is now in the Czech Republic. He will stay here until the end of the week. He is under the care of Czech sports doctors, who are internationally recognised.
