Bayern weren’t the worse team in the first leg, but Citizens sent them into the lead with a stunning goal from Rodri.
The Bavarian side entered the second half very decently, but they couldn’t score and instead bought big mistakes.
Stopper Dayot Upamecano played with the ball for so long until Jack Grealish took it away from him and sent in Erling Haaland’s chance. He challenged Bernardo Silva to score with a fluffy curve and the little Portuguese made no mistake with his header.
Haaland himself got through for the third time to give the Citizens a comfortable lead. After the game, Upamecan was the subject of much criticism, but Tuchel stood up for him.
“I don’t think the problem was his duels with Haaland, but how much he took risks. He knows he has to improve. But it doesn’t help anything to point fingers at individuals. We were punished severely. But we have full faith in him and we are behind him. He is young and has a lot of potential,” Tuchel said of Upamecan.
Bayern was also rocked by the Sadio Mane affair. The Senegalese striker punched teammate Leroy Sané with his fist in the locker room after the match. A possible expulsion from the squad was also discussed, but this did not happen in the end.
“Sadio is in the squad for the quarter-finals. If he will be in the starting lineup, you have to wait and see,” the German coach did not want to reveal anything.
